David Hartman, Lindenbaum-Pomrenze Lecture 2, 7-April-2008 – Jerusalem, Israel, Shalom Hartman Institute: Morality Confronts the Halakhic Tradition: Rethinking Traditional Perspectives on Women, Converts, and Non-Jews
Not understanding the reasoning of Halakha does not entitle one to dismiss parts of it and replace it with the dubious rational of well meaning feelings.
Consider than when you realise that your well meaning feelings were wrong will you be able to reverse the damage you caused, it is a big weight you are carrying on your shoulders when you substitute halakha for your morality.
I feel the desperation of David hartman, his rebelliousness against god and Halakha, enncapsulated in the question he posed, ‘how can we say there is a god when he let the holocaust happen’ , similar questions he raises for Halakha.
Just a thought, enabling us to to see a small strand of the complexity of this question : What does not kill you makes you stronger, to some extend the holocaust made Jews stronger, straight afterwards Israel was re established !
